Detrital zircon U-Pb ages and source of the late Palaeocene Thanet Formation, Kent, SE England

چکیده
The sources of the Paleocene London Basin marine to fluviodeltaic sandstones are currently unclear. High analysis number detrital zircon U-Pb age investigation an early-mid Thanetian sand from East Kent, reveals a large spread peaks indicative range primary sources. In particular, strong Ediacaran peak is associated with Cadomian Orogeny, while secondary represent Caledonian and various Mesoproterozoic Archean orogenies. near absence grains Variscan orogeny refutes southerly or southwesterly source Cornubia Armorica, points Avalonian origin for major component material. Furthermore, relatively well expressed components most likely require significant additional Laurentian input. Comparison published data shows that both Devonian Old Red Sandstone northwesterly (Avalonia-Laurentia) derived Namurian-Westphalian Pennine show similarities sand. This pattern consistent derivation material via SE draining proto-Thames River system was initiated in due uplift western northwestern Britain. river would have incised eroded cover potentially also basement mid north Wales England. However, possibility contribution directly longshore drift cannot be excluded by data, extent which sediment signatures Paleogene sands variable geographically over time remains

DETRITAL ZIRCON U/Pb AGE DETERMINATION: UNDERSTANDING THE PROVENANCE OF THE LATE- CRETACEOUS SHUMAGIN FORMATION, ALASKA
The Chugach-Prince William (CPW) terrane is an Upper Cretaceous to Eocene accretionary complex exposed for ~2200 km in southern Alaska, extending from Baranof Island in the east to Sanak Island in the west. One of the thickest subduction-related accretionary complexes in the world, the CPW terrane is composed of deep-water flysch and associated volcanic rocks and is intruded by near-trench plut...
متن کاملNew ideas on the Proterozoic-Early Palaeozoic evolution of NW Iberia: insights from U–Pb detrital zircon ages
U–Pb ages were obtained on single detrital zircon grains separated from six samples of Neoproterozoic and Lower Palaeozoic sedimentary and volcanosedimentary rocks from NW Iberia using the laser ablation microprobe-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LAM-ICP-MS) method. Precambrian greywackes yielded abundant zircons with Neoproterozoic (800–640 Ma) and Mesoproterozoic (0.9–1.2 Ga) ag...
متن کاملControls on erosion intensity in the Yangtze River basin tracked by U–Pb detrital zircon dating
a r t i c l e i n f o The Yangtze River dominates the drainage of eastern Asia, yet the processes that control erosion within the basin are obscure, making the interpretation of the detritus record difficult. In this study we used U–Pb dating of zircon grains from the modern main stream and major tributaries to identify the sources of sediment production, based on the diversity of zircon ages a...

متن کاملNEOGENE TECTONIC EVOLUTION OF THE MAGDALENA SHELF AND SOUTHERN GULF OF CALIFORNIA: INSIGHTS FROM DETRITAL ZIRCON U-Pb AGES FROM THE MAGDALENA FAN AND ADJACENT AREAS
The Magdalena fan is an apparently beheaded submarine depocenter that has figured prominently in Middle to late Miocene reconstructions of Pacific-North American plate interactions. The deposit accumulated rapidly at the base of the continental slope atop newly formed oceanic crust of the Farallon plate from 14.5-13 Ma. Subduction of this crust ceased as the Pacific-Farallon spreading center en...
